The story follows a mysterious global phenomenon where mobile phones are snatched from the hands of users by an unseen force. This force manifests as a giant winged monster made of cell phones, controlled by the spirit of (Akshay Kumar), a former ornithologist who seeks vengeance against humanity for the avian deaths caused by mobile tower radiation.

Unlike most Indian films that are converted to 3D in post-production, 2.0 was shot natively in 3D using specialized cameras handled by cinematographer Nirav Shah.
